TRAVEL STORY – ITALY
Le stanze della poesia
On the small island of Ponza, you find the vineyard of the poet, artist and adventurer Antonio De Luca. This is one of the most beautiful and wildest places on the island. On the walls of the house quotes from great poets welcome us, and the atmosphere here is full of soul and an adventures life.
Antonio's idyllic place is isolated on a cliff and is watching after the island of Ponza. The view from here is spectacular. You can see the neighbour island Palmarola and the turquoise sea beyond. The place is not easily accessible. You have to climb steep cliffs from the sea, and donkeys are used to transport goods up from the town. The characteristic house, painted in the colors red and blue, is a gem on the island. Here Antonio De Luca lives a peaceful and spartan life all summer long.
Experiencing Il Fieno is like taking a trip back in time. The vineyard, which is over a hundred years old, is still without electricity and water. The wine is pressed in the traditional way, and Antonio is one of the last to use this method. In the autumn, people come here to experience wine production in a real way. After a long day of grape pressing, the atmosphere in the kitchen is completely unique. Antonio's kitchen is a place you just want to be.
Old handcraft and culture are mixed in Antonio's house. Almost all of the furniture and materials are taken from the nature in the area and the surrounding sea. The house is built of stone from the farm and plaster made of the surrounding earth. Wood that has been transported by sea and driven ashore on the island is also widely used in the house.
This simple building technique is professionally mixed with sensitivity from Antonio. The materials have lived a long life in a rough environment, and only get more and more beautiful with time. You can almost smell the earth and salt sea when you enter the room.
– Just like in a boat, we can be anywhere in the Mediterranean, says Antonio.
His house is dedicated to Antonio's idol; the Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa, and has been given the name La Jangada De Pedra, which means stone raft in Portuguese. He adds that the name is a metaphor for the journey and the simple life.
The house is marked by Antonio's many travels around the world and memories of these adventures spice up his interior style. The wonderful mix of Mediterranean colors, memories from different parts of the world, wall poetry and local materials is very special. This, combined with the presence of Antonio De Luca, gives the lucky visitor a unique experience that will mark one for the rest of one's life.
